Biographical Notes:
Alfred Gibbs was born on April 22,1823 to LFA student, Laura Wolcott Gibbs and George Gibbs III. He was the grandson of Oliver Wolcott Jr., Secretary of the Treasury. On December 27, 1855, he married Virginia resident, Peggy Forshee Clair. Together they had two sons who led successful lives.

In 1846, Gibbs graduated from West Point and had a long successful military career. He served in the Mexican-American War, the Apache Wars, and the American Civil War. Shortly after his graduation, he was assigned to the Regiment of Mounted Rifles. His regiment fought in the Mexican-American War, and Gibbs was captured twice and wounded. He was award ranks of Brevet First Lieutenant and Brevet Captain.

"Brevet Major-Gen. ALFRED GIBBS, Major of the Seventh United States Cavalry, died at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on Saturday, aged 46 years. Gen. GIBBS was born in the State, graduated at West Point in 1846, and was at once appointed a Second Lieutenant of Mounted Rifles. He was subsequently promoted Captain of the Second Cavalry. During the war he was commissioned as Colonel of one of the New-York Cavalry Regiments, and was soon after made a Brigadier-General. For gallant services in the Army of the Potomac he was brevetted Major-General of Volunteers, and subsequently Major-General of the Army. At the close of the war he was appointed Major of the Seventh Cavalry and served with his regiment up to the time of his death."
