He had a store on the west side of the square in Quincy, a distillery, a grist mill in the southern part of Adams county, and a warehouse on the Mississippi River. He built a home, known as "Boscobel" and later owned by General James W. Singleton, east of the city. On August 13, 1838 Mr. Whitney was married to Mary Ann Monson Cutler, the widow of George Younglove Cutler of Hancock County. She passed away in 1844. In the late 1840's Mr. Whitney's business ventures in Illinois began to fail, and in 1849 he removed to California where he undertook new business ventures. In January of 1870 he died in a railroad car collision.
