Biographical Notes:
Roswell King, born May 3, 1765, was the son of Timonthy and Sarah Fitch King of Windsor, Connecticut. In 1782 Roswell enlisted in the Army at the age of 17. In 1789, after the end of the Revolutionary War he relocated to Darien, Georgia. In Georgia he became a successful businessman and not only ran a construciton business, but also became a landowner and was a commission broker for rice, cotton, and lumber. Roswell also served as Justice of the Peace. On April 14, 1792 he married Katherine Barrington King of Savilla Bluff, Georgia, and the couple began their family of ten children. From 1794 until 1795 he served in the Georgia House of Representatives. Owning plantations himself, he became the manager of Major Pierce Butler's plantations in 1802, but resigned by 1820.
