Biographical Notes:
Eliza Jumel was born into poverty in 1775 in Rhode Island, abandoned at an early age by her mother. She was known for being an intelligent and ambitious beauty, and moved to New York in 1794, becoming an actress. Eliza Jumel's first husband was Stephen Jumel, a prominent French wine merchant whom she married in 1804. The couple purchased the Morris Mansion (now the Morris-Jumel Mansion) in Manhattan in 1810. The couple frequently traveled abroad and socialized with members of the French Imperial Court. When Jumel died in a carriage accident in 1832, Eliza inherited an immense estate. She married Aaron Burr in 1833, rekindling their earlier aquaintance.
