Biographical Notes:
William Platt Buffet was the son of Issac and Hannah Hedges Buffet. He prepared for college by studying with his uncle, the Reverend Platt Buffett. He attended Yale College and was graduated in 1812. The following year William entered into the study of the law at the Litchfield Law School. After completing his studies, he spent two years studying law in a law office in New York City. Following his admission to the bar, he formed a partnership with Ezra L'Hommedieu. In 1851 William was elected Judge of the Suffolk County Court.

On April 25, 1825 William married Nancy Rogers of Islip, New York, and the couple had five children. He died on October 7, 1874 at the age of 82.

Records for the schools were sporadic, especially in the formative years of both institutions. If instructors kept comprehensive records for the Litchfield Female Academy or the Litchfield Law School, they do not survive. Researchers and staff have identified students through letters, diaries, family histories and genealogies, and town histories as well as catalogues of students printed in various years. Art and needlework have provided further identification of Female Academy Students, and Litchfield County Bar records document a number of Law School students. The history of both schools and the identification of the students who attended them owe credit to the early 20th century research and documentation efforts of Emily Noyes Vanderpoel and Samuel Fisher, and the late 20th century research and documentation efforts of Lynne Templeton Brickley and the Litchfield Historical Society staff.
