Peter Avery was a Captain and served during the American Revolution. In 1781, he was wounded and captured at Fort Griswold.
He married Hannah Avery in 1787 and had five children together and remarried Nancy Ledyard in 1808. HIs daughter, Hannah Avery attend Sarah Pierce's Female Academy.
