Biographical Notes:
John Pierce arrived in Litchfield from Wethersfield and Farmington, Connecticut some thirty years after the first settlement of the town He was, as were most early settlers, a farmer and also works as a potter, making the red earthen-ware pots, pails, jars and pans commonly used in local households. Inheriting the Litchfield property from his father, Pierce accumulated a fair amount of additional land and served in a variety of minor town offices, including several terms as a member of the local school committee. Pierce was a solid middle-class farmer, artisan and property owner, having bought a house and land on North Street in the center of Litchfield where his nine children were to grow up.
