Jabez W. Huntington writes a lengthy letter to Frederick Wolcott reporting on state politics; William Bristol won the caucus for the Governorship; Oliver Wolcott came in second; he expects Bristol to decline and Oliver to be at the head of the ticket again; political wrangling as to the nomination of a Senator, the House voted for Calvin Willey, the Senate voted for James Lanman; specifies how the state senators voted in the election for Senate; details appointments for judges and sheriffs in Connecticut counties; facetiously comments about the growth in the numbers of great men seeking office in the state; criticizes the thirst for office; discusses petitions from towns regarding local government; reports on bills regarding Mill River in Fairfield, exemption for students at  Captain Alden Partridge from military service for four years,  providing for widows and family in estates, taxing land of estates, addressing the problem of fraud and insolvency of the deceased;  Sherman’s bill to abolish county courts is unlikely to pass; introduces a bill to protect manufacturing interests; House passed a bill to reorganize the Senate giving the four larger counties three senators and the smaller counties two; expects the young guard of the state’s Democratic party to take over the party and cast off the old guard; reports of the state’s legislature’s discussion of the appropriate salary for school commissioner Seth P. Beers; Judge Asa Chapman wants to continue to serve on the state’s high court, but has the look of a walking corpse.
