Name: Phelps, Mary Lewis (1836-1911)

Historical Note: Mary Lewis Phelps was the daughter of Henry and Louise (Lewis) Phelps. She was born in the house where she died, now #7 East Street, Litchfield, Conn. Her grandparents on her mother's side were Luke and Mary (Root) Lewis. Mary Ann Lewis was her aunt. Miss Phelps was active in the Litchfield Historical Society, serving as Secretary from 1895-1909, Secretary and Curator 1905-1909, and donating collection items and papers. She was also a devoted member of the Congregational Church. She died on March 23, 1911 and is buried in Litchfield's East Cemetery.
