Name: Cushman, John P. (John Paine) (1784-1848)

Historical Note:

John Paine Cushman (1784-1848) was born in Connecticut in 1784.  He graduated from Yale College in 1807, after which he studied law at the Litchfield Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1809. He began practice in Troy, New York.  From 1817 to 1819 he served as a Federalist in the Fifteenth Congress.  Afterwards, he resumed the practice of law and served as a regent of the State University from 1830 until 1834; a trustee of Union College in Schenectady, New York, from 1833 until his death; recorder of Troy from 1834-1838; and judge of the circuit court of the third circuit 1838-1844. 

He married Maria Tallmadge, the daughter of Benjamin Tallmadge.  He died in Troy in 1848.
