Maquette
Alexander Calder, 1958
Oil on plywood
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus C. Stillman
1974-18-6 (1974-106-64)

This maquette, or study, was for a mural for the swimming pool at the Marcel Breuer-designed home of Rufus and Leslie Stillman. Calder created this geometric design after the first one, which included a group of figures, was deemed too racy.

This was on view as part of the 2003 exhibit "In Our Own Time: Modern Architecture in Litchfield 1949-1970."
