Landscape, Congregational Church
Adelaide Deming
Litchfield, Connecticut, c. 1920
Oil on canvas
Collection of the Litchfield Historical Society
A favorite of Deming's, this view appears
in her paintings at least three times. Yet none of the paintings
show the town as it looked in 1920: the artist altered the placement
of the buildings to suit her creative vision.
One version of this painting hung prominently
over the mantlel of the painter's home on North Street. Today, two
examples are in the collection of the Litchfield Historical Society,
and a third is in a private collection.
