Gift of Mrs. Newton Crane, John Deming Crane, Judith Langdon Deming Crane

Julius Deming was a merchant who made his fortune in the China trade in the years after the Revolutionary War. This portrait, one of a group of four portraits commissioned by a 20th century Deming descendent, was copied from a miniature.

This was one of a group of four portraits Coffin painted for the Deming family, including portraits of Frederick Deming, Esquire, Maj. Ebenezer Steel Gleason, and Hon. Jeremiah Gates Brainard.
