According to the family genealogy, Deming was "an accomplished linguist, and musician.His son Frederick possessed great musical gifts, and was an organist of more than ordinary merit."

This was one of a group of four portraits Coffin painted for the Deming family, including portraits of Julius Deming, Maj. Ebenezer Steel Gleason, and Hon. Jeremiah Gates Brainard.
