Biographical Notes:
Rufus Paine Spaulding was educated at several private schools before attending Yale college from which he was graduated in 1817. Spaulding studied law with judge Zephaniah Swift. He moved to Little Rock, AR where he established a law practice. In 1821 he left Little Rock and settled in Warren, OH. In 1822, he married
Lucretia Swift, daughter of Zephaniah with whom he had studied law. Living in various towns and cities in Ohio, Spaulding served in a number of offices including the Ohio House of Representatives, as a judge of the Ohio Supreme Court, and the U.S. House of Representatives. As an opponent of slavery, he fought the fugitive slave law in courts. Spaulding was active in the Masonic lodge.
Following the death of Lucretia, with whom he had 7 children, Spaulding married Nancy Sergeant Pierson of Windsor, CT in 1859.
