Frances Lothrop Lathrop (March 15, 1833)

John Hiram Lathrop was born on January 22, 1799 in Sherburne, New York. He was the son of John and Prudence Hatch Lathrop. On March 15, 1833, he married Frances Lothrop and had five children.

Lathrop started his college career at Yale and attained his bachelor degree in 1819 and a Master's in 1822. During those years, he was a tutor and began studying law from 1822-1826. Lathrop was admitted to the bar in 1826.

After school, Lathrop became a principal for the Lyceum in Gardiner Main from 1827-28. From 1828 to 1834, he was a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy for Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. In addition, he was a Maynard professor of law, civil polity, and political economy. From 1835 to 1837 he taught political and historical jurisprudence.

A ...couple years later, Lathrop became the first president of the University of Missouri in Columbia from 1840-49. He then served as he first Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin from 1849-59. Lathrop moved to become the president of the Indiana State University in Bloomington from 1859-60. He returned to the University of Missouri to teach English Literature but served as President for one year from 1856-66 .

On August 2, 1866, Doctor Lathrop passed away in Columbia Mo.
