Caroline Ogden was the daughter of Abraham and Abigail Ogden. She was born in Walton, NY on July 18, 1817. The couple had twins on March 12, 1847 and named them William Ogden Jones and Caroline Ogden Jones. Caroline's brother, William Butler Ogden, was the first mayor of Chicago, IL, where he had migrated to manage the land interests of their brother-in-law, Charles Butler. By 1846, Caroline's husband William E. Jones was also involved in this business, and at some point the family relocated there. Caroline had two more children with William, who died in 1851. She then married lawyer Ezra B. McCagg in 1854 and they had one child. Newspaper reports and court records indicate that Caroline and Ezra McCagg were separated for many years, but not divorced. She traveled in Europe and lived with her unmarried daughters in New York and Newport, RI.
