Joseph Scovil, Jr. is commissioned as a corporal in the 6th Company of the 17th Regiment of Connecticut Militia. Signed by Hezekiah Hopkins, Lieut. Col. Commandt. of 17th Regiment Militia at Harwinton on 5 May 1798.

Governor Isaac H. Williamson of New Jersey grants a license to Hopkins Scovil as a "hawker pedler or petty Chapman" to travel by horse or horses in the state of New Jersey. Said license is for one year and issued 28 Feb. 1826.
