[Back to Formatted Version]
Brief Description: The Philip P. Hubbard papers (2010-20-0, .21 linear feet) pertain to Philip P. Hubbard (1859-1945), a prominent Litchfield, Conn., banker who was also associated with several local businesses and organizations, and members of his family. His mother was Abby Jane Wells Hubbard (1826-1908), and the collection contains a number of deeds and other land documents from 1806-1862 regarding her father Tomlinson Wells, her grandfathers Philip Wells and Amos Smith, and other members of the Wells and Smith families. Most of the collection consists of correspondence from about 1866 through 1889. Hubbard graduated from Yale College in 1885 and afterwards he maintained correspondence with some of  his classmates. The collection contains letters written by his sister Anna Hubbard (1859-1909), brothers John Tomlinson Hubbard (1856-1937) and Frank Wells Hubbard (1865-1926), his father Congressman John H. Hubbard (1804-1872), and his mother. There also letters written by friends. Of particular interest are letters written by Hubbard's cousin Philip Wells (1859-1919) while he was a reporter working in Milwaukee, Wisc., in which he discusses reporting and newsapers, going west to Idaho, women, the value of college, baseball, his philosophy regarding life, his memories of Litchfield and friends, and other topics. In 1907, Wells became publisher of The New Milford Gazette. Several letters Hubbard wrote to his mother are found in the collection.
