Brief Description:

The Prof. Egbert Lyon's Trick Oxen Papers (1971-40-0) consist of six photographs and several promotional pieces and clippings advertising Prof. Lyon's trick oxen, Tim and Jim, and a history written by his daughter Celeste Bierce.  These oxen performed at agricultural fairs, including those in Harwinton and Danbury, Connecticut and at the Columbian Exposition.

Egbert Lyon was born June 8, 1859 in the Northville section of Washington, Connecticut.  He learned his father's trade of masonry and plastering, but left after developing a fear of heights.  He settled on a farm in the Whigville section of Burlington, CT and it was hear that he began training his oxen to do tricks.  He married Adella Louise Merrill of Collinsville or New Hartford, CT in 1885.  They had 5 children.  Prof. Lyon died February 3, 1931.  He and his wife are buried in Hillside Cemetery in Torrington, CT.
